Today was my day off work and I had scheduled an appointment for Kwabena at the Cranial Techologies place, where they work with kids with flat heads. Everyone kept telling me that his head is fine, but I had been concerned about it since he was about 1.5 months old. Anyhow, the visit was great! Leslie, one of the doctors, was very patient and friendly, and the visit was very informative. Her professional opinion was that his head is mildly flat, but didn’t warrant any medical treatment. She stressed the importance of “tummy time”, not only because it keeps him off his head, but because the muscles of his back are attached to the bones at the base of his skull, and when he’s on his tummy, looking up, it causes the muscles to pull on the bones, helping to round out the back. This kind of explanation I have never received. Now that I understand that there is something I can do to help round out the back of his head, I have been more diligent about putting him on his tummy. However, this kid is now moving all around! He’s rolling from front to back….back to front…pushing up on his hands, and even trying to get a knee underneath of him! The other night Kwasi and I put him on his tummy, before bath time, and there he crawled around with his diaper on, wiggling around like a kid on a boogey board. I put him in one direction, and before you knew it, he did a complete 360-degree turn! So he’s definitely getting around.
