December 9, 2006 – A Day Home With Mommy

December 22, 2006 By Serena Leave a Comment

Kwabena and I stayed in all day today (Saturday). This is usually our Sunday routine (which I have grown to love), but since it’s so cold outside that there’s nothing I want to do than to stay bundled inside. Plus, Kwabena has come down with a little cold and has had a slight, mucus cough, along with rosy cheeks, so it’s best not to take him outside. I also have started to feel like I’m coming down with something. One of my coworkers came to work this week while sick, and I believe she passed it along to me (and probably other people, too). Why do people come to work while sick??This afternoon I fed Kwabena some sweet potatoes and he gobbled them up! I had been trying to introduce solid foods slowly, only because there doesn’t seem to be a need for them right now; it’s more something that I wanted to do for me—just to see him taste his first foods. Early on, his daycare provider suggested several times that I send cereal with him to daycare so that she can feed him during the day, and I haven’t done that yet. Part of me thinks that these first introductions should be my job, not the job of the daycare lady. It’s bad enough that I have to work 9-hour days (not including my commute times!), so that I miss a lot of time with Kwabena during the day. I just want to be the one to introduce him to new foods and enjoy that special experience, and not the daycare lady. When he turns 6 months old is when feeding solids are particularly important. Right now, it’s more for my own enjoyment. Although, this morning he really seemed to enjoy those sweet potatoes! We don’t have a high chair yet, so I feed him in his car seat, which as worked out fine. He does like to grab his feet and chew on them in between bites if I don’t get the bites into his mouth quickly enough, which causes him to get food all over his pajama feet! Too cute.Lately, his favorite thing to do is play in this Jumperoo toy that one of my coworkers gave to me this past week. Her son is over a year old now, and had out-grown the toy. It’s the coolest thing. It allows him to sit in it and jump up and down. He’s all smiles when he’s in that thing! Today I was even able to get him to laugh as I jumped up and down right along with him, shouting, “Jump! Jump! Jump!” It was so funny!I’m just loving motherhood so much right now. Who would have known it would be this great?? I mean, I wasn’t the most selfless person, you know. I was very much into myself and what I wanted to do and when I wanted to do it. Now, Kwabena is my main focus, and I put him before myself. When I get home from work, I take care of his needs. We play together… get ready for bath time…. Eat… And I usually don’t get to take care of myself until after I put him to bed at 7 p.m. That is fine. Kwasi is wonderful in that he prepares dinner, usually, while I take care of Kwabena. What a partnership!Speaking of cooking, I know that this is one of my weaknesses, so learning how to cook and making new meals is part of my resolution for 2007. I have this book called Super Baby Foods, about how to feed your baby from infancy through three years old. There are great recipes in there, one of which I made the other night. It was vegetarian hot dogs, according to the recipe, but Kwasi and I made them into little patties. We fried him briefly in olive oil, and put them on toast. They were soooo good! I was very proud of myself for discovering a simple little recipe that could nourish my family. I’m going to work on cooking more things in this new year.
