Kwabena is potty trained!!!

October 19, 2008 By Serena 2 Comments

Okay, I’m going to officially call it:

Kwabena is potty trained!

Well, there are still some things I’m trying to work out……but basically, while he was home last week from daycare (due to fever), I left him diaperless. The first pee of the morning, I had to help him get to the potty, but after that, he went on his own!

Over this weekend, I haven’t had to help him at all; he just walks over and GOES. Today, he’s already peed 4 times on his own, AND poopied in the potty!

YAY!!!!!

Yesterday he did just as well…….so well that I ventured out of the house for 2 hours in big boy undies–no diaper! When we arrived at the grocery store, I took him to the bathroom and sat him on the toilet, and he peed immediately!

We drove 1.5 hours home to see Mom yesterday. I thought for sure he would pee in the car (maybe accidentally while he napped on the way there). But he didn’t. And as soon as we arrived to my mom’s place, I took him to the bathroom and he peed as soon as I placed him there.

EXCITING!

I did have to put him in a diaper yesterday at the corn maze, because there was no bathroom nearby. But oh well. It was just exciting to know that my baby is now a big boy that GETS how to use the potty.

Today he did even BETTER! He has peed on the potty about 5 or 6 times, and pooped twice! All on his own!!!

Like I have said before, this process has been painless for both of us…..very gradual. Just yesterday I realized that I have to test him to see what he can handle. I wanted to test how he would do in big boy undies, and he did so well.

Now I am curious how potty training will be at daycare. I know that it’s unrealistic to think he could walk around diaperless (LOL). Miss Marilyn has been talking to him, getting him ready mentally for potty training there. Most likely she will put pull-ups on him.

But my theory on pull-ups is that they don’t work; not for Kwabena. I think that if he knows he’s got a diaper or pull-up on, he’s more likely to just PEE in it.

I think the next part of the process will to get him used to wearing pants and undies and pulling them down in time to use the potty, AND to tell us beforehand, in case he needs help with getting his pants down. We’ll see how it goes.

I’m also unsure of how this potty training thing goes during nap times. I haven’t been “brave” enough to test him at nap time to see if he can hold it until he wakes up. That will be our next step. And nighttime will be the last step. I still give Kwabi milk and water before bed, and sometimes when he wakes up in the middle of the night he wants milk or water. It will be tougher for him to wake up dry.

Anyhow, I’m so proud of him for learning and being able to make the connection! He’s proud of himself, too.

🙂

Anyhow, here are some pictures of what we’ve been up to lately!

In the corn maze

We tried to get this picture right…..But a certain little someone was a little too enthusiastic in saying “cheese!”

…Now I’ve got black lines on my face, and the sun is in Kwabi’s eyes….

…Now I look half asleep….

Finally! A great shot!

I seriously would have died if that happened to me LOL. Reminder to keep a spare pair of pants in the car.
