We’re always so rushed. Our minds our elsewhere. We hear our children laughing too loudly, playing too loudly. We’re easily distracted with our phones in our hands, our heads bent down, scanning social media. All the while, we miss our surroundings. All the things that slip so easily from our grasp.
The other morning after I got out of the shower, getting ready for work, I heard Kwabena in his room, the first day of Spring Break, humming and making noises in his room. I stopped and just soaked in the sound and what it really meant: my son was happy. He was content. His mind was free from worry. He was happily making noises.
I stopped and listened. And I later cried about how beautiful that moment was. Simply because I paused to listen.
