When Kids Don’t Watch TV

July 30, 2012 By Serena Leave a Comment

Just imagine what discoveries you can make when you just get out from in front of the TV. That was our experience today. Kwabena and Ohene wanted to play with Hassan, our 8-year old neighbor from next door. It was disheartening to see that all their play ended up either playing video games, or in front of the TV watching Nick or something. I finally had to take them for a walk down to the neighborhood playground. While there, we went on a further explorative walk into what appeared to be peoples’ backyard, but really was a part of the parks area.

It was so lovely! We even found tons of bamboo, and a little path through the bamboo, leading to a small stream. And in the middle of that bamboo was like a cool little hide-out!

We saw open fields….two monarch butterflies chasing each other….and even Hassan and Kwabena were chasing each other, stretching their legs, climbing trees, and just being BOYS. It was a lovely sight to see. To hell with television!! I want my boys to run and play outside, and explore areas unknown, and to play in the dirt.

Poor Ohene, who’s had a fever today, was trying to keep up, but he kept wanting me to carry him (while Kojo was on my back, in the carrier). He said, “I’m too small to keep up.” CUTE, but not cute when you’ve carrying 50 lbs of children on an exploration! OUCH, may aching back!

Overall, what a lovely day! And the kids really enjoyed our walk, too!

Swimming!

It’s a shame that it’s been 2 years since Kwabena’s been in a pool. A damn shame. What kind of parents are we?? Well, he enjoyed himself at Mom’s community pool. I went up with just Kwabena last Thursday so I could attend to some rental property business (ugh, don’t get me started on that crap….). But anyhow, good day it was, otherwise!
