15 Days Old!

December 1, 2011 By Serena Leave a Comment

I can’t believe it’s been just over 2 weeks already since Kojo was born! I’m embarrassed to say that I haven’t made blogging a priority. I don’t have a lot of extra time on my hands, but the time I DO get, I end up on Facebook or Pinterest, a website I have been spending a lot of time on in the last month or so.

I’m glad that I at least blogged my birth story, so that I don’t forget all the details. But I want to blog his daily life, so that I don’t forget any of that, either!
Overall, things have been going remarkably well! It’s as if Kojo just came into our lives and we continued with barely any hiccups! I was expecting exhaustion….total lack of time and energy….a totally messy house because, after all, I have THREE KIDS now!!– but really, none of that has happened!
His sleeping habits when we first brought him home wasn’t bad–just lots of feedings (about 3 per night), and what was tiring was that he would wake up and fuss a little when I would put him in the swing or the pack n’ play. I felt like I was jumping up every 15-30 minutes to soothe him. Because I get so many emails (due to my subscriptions to DIY and personal finance blogs, LOL), I had plenty to read on my phone while the baby nursed several times per night. It was still tiring, though. However, I have since figured out that bringing him into bed with us (like what we did with Ohene) was going to be the less tiresome and easier option. Plus, he seems to like it in bed with us! I lay him right up under the crook of my arm most times, with him on his side (I know, babies “should” be on their backs….), and that is how he likes it. I can nurse him lying down and it’s not disturbing to me or to him.
So we’ve got the sleeping thing down, for now! I have actually been going to bed at a decent time, because I am more tired. Staying up till midnight or later just isn’t feasible for me when I know I will have to be up several times.
I have been on maternity leave 2 weeks now, and it’s SERIOUSLY flying by too quickly!!! I feel like the days blend in to each other, and just looking up at the clock, 7 hours fly by, and then it’s time to pick Kwabena up from the bus stop, go get Ohene, eat dinner, put them to bed, and then do it all over again. I wish I could slow time down a bit!
So we spend our days with Kwasi working (from the upstairs office-soon-to-be-my-new-crafting-room), and Kojo spends it sleeping most of the day. I end up on Facebook or Pinterest, or as of lately, trying to decorate the half-bathroom off of the family room. About 2 months ago, or more, I had removed that wallpaper and never finished decorating it. So I am now about to prime the walls, and paint 🙂 It’s about time!!!
The last couple days I’ve taken to catching up on all my missed “Dexter” shows from Showtime 🙂
Ahhhh…..I do love maternity leave!
So, the baby is doing well!!! We had his 2 week check-up yesterday, and he is now 8 lbs 15 oz! At birth he was 7 lbs 5 oz…….By 3 days old, he slipped to 6 lbs 15 oz (normal for breastfed babies)…..and since that day after discharge, he has gained 2 lbs! 🙂
He’s such a sweet baby! The kids love him (more Kwabena than Ohene, it seems, since Ohene likes to occasionally HIT the baby, or say he’s going to CUT the baby……ay yay yay……LOL). Kwabena likes to give him tons of hugs. And what is the best is the way he kisses the baby. You may not think this is a big deal, but Kwabena has become the kid that doesn’t like to kiss or BE kissed! So, for him to kiss all over the baby, is really cute 🙂
Ohene is doing very well, too–better than what most people expected. I thought he would act jealous and want to be all over me when I am holding or nursing the baby. But oddly enough, he acts just fine, with the occasional aggressiveness (see above) and general aggressiveness (lately he is more into punching and hitting, which is odd, because he doesn’t do that at Miss Marilyn’s; he’s the perfect angel there, LOL).
But yeah, overall, everyone is doing very well!
We have since kicked Ohene out of our bed. LOL He is over in Kwabena’s room now, in his toddler bed that I bought for him a couple months ago. The times we’d tried to get him to sleep in there, he didn’t want to, and would cry and come to our bed. But Kwasi, one day, just decided he’d had enough of being kicked at night, and just put Ohene over there in his room. Now he goes there for naps on the weekends, in addition to sleeping there at night! I’m surprised we can just walk out and he just goes right to sleep, along with Kwabena! Impressive 🙂 He still wakes up around 1 a.m., but usually Kwasi just sends him right back to bed, and he obeys 🙂 No problems! (Last night, however, Kwasi let him come into our bed).
Not too much else going on! Just adjusting nicely to being a family of FIVE! I still can’t believe it. Oh, as for me, I’m still FAT as hell. I was about 211 lbs when I went into the hospital (I think, although I hadn’t re-weighed myself that morning), and I am now 17 pounds lighter (including baby), at 194.8 lbs. But that’s still way too huge. Not fair! But what did I expect eating my face off the way I did? 🙂
Once cleared, I am starting my exercise program, and I hope that gets the weight off. I still need to control my snacking. But that will come….
Well, back to watching “Dexter”! 🙂
