Canadian Ski Trip

March 2, 2009 By Serena Leave a Comment

I can’t believe I’ve been letting this blog go longer and longer in between posts. That’s very unlike me, who tends to get diarrhea of the hands on a daily basis. I’ve been very busy killing time in the evening (Facebook, what else??), as well as doing lots of sewing in the evening. And at work I just haven’t had the time or effort to do my lengthy blogging.

But here I am tonight!

Yesterday we returned from a Canadian ski trip, where we met up with Kwasi’s cousin. We left Wednesday, shuffling our way hurriedly to the airport, only to get there to find that–surprise!–the reservationist had booked us for February 15th and not the 25th. So instead of catching the early flight, we had to stand-by for the next flight, 2.5 hours later. Luckily we made it on that flight!

We flew into Buffalo, where we were greeted by Kwasi’s cousin, and shortly after stopped and got some food from Spicy Thai, which is becoming our regular spot when we travel to Canada. 🙂 After dinner, we drove the rest of the way to the resort, which was about 3 hours away, and didn’t get in until probably 2 a.m.

The place we stayed in was a beautiful townhome close to the resort. How cozy! Very expensive, though…which didn’t feel good considering that I am on this new thrifty kick. Kwasi paid for most of my expenses, though. 🙂 But still….it felt crazy to spend that kind of money when my #1 goal is to live like a miser.

Thursday we suited up and went to to the ski slopes!

I was excited to get Kwabena on skis (or is it spelled “skiis”?). Surprisingly, he did pretty good! We went down the bunny slope several times, but on the last time down my skiis crossed and I fell on top of Kwabena! Actually, I partially fell on his head and my fall pushed his face down in the snow. Oh no! Poor thing was wailing, “You hurt me! That was not very nice!” I can laugh about it now…. LOL

Kwasi and his brother, Kofi, did some ski lessons while I skied with Kwabena. I did think it was a little unfair that I didn’t get a chance to do some skiing on my own. I discovered on this trip that vacation is not really vacation when a toddler is involved. LOL! I say that because the parents (mostly Mommy!) are still “on.” Being in a different location means nothing; you’re still responsible for someone other than yourself, and unless there are daycare options (there were, but it was very expensive and required pre-booking, which we hadn’t done enough planning for), then most of your activities will be dictated by that little one.

Anyhow, we spend about half a day skiing, and then had lunch. We were so exhausted that we were knocked out in the dining area! Luckily Kwasi watched (er…chased….) Kwabena while we napped.

After our little nap, the guys went back out and skiied for a bit, and I chased Kwabena around and tried to get him to stop eating dirty snow (with not much success!)

Friday the plan was to head to Toronto, but we got blasted with snow and terrible winds. So we ended up staying inside damn near all day…watching movies…checking Facebook…questioning why we were sitting around when we were supposed to be on vacation (lol at the irony of that question). Actually, we were planning to go snow mobiling early in the afternoon, but it didn’t happen until later in the evening, around 5 p.m., when the guy running the place came to pick us up. I was concerned about leaving Kwabena with someone from the business, and was ready to pull out if needed.

So the man came to pick us up and took us back to his little cabin for warm gear. We were going to be snow mobiling for a good hour (or more). Kwabena did excellent at one of the workers’ house. His wife took excellent care of Kwabena, and he didn’t even cry once! (Kwabena is awesome!)

And we had fun snow mobiling! (That’s me second from the left).

On Saturday we drove to Toronto. We visited an old friend of Kwasi’s parents, Mr. Poku. Mr. Poku’s wife fixed us dinner, offered us drinks (mmmm….it’d been a while since I had a yummy Smirnoff!). Kwabena was on excellent behavior, walking around like he was at home…(crazy kid!) It was great seeing Mr. Poku reading books to Kwabena on our visit….made me a little sad thinking that Kwasi’s dad will never have that opportunity (he passed Nov. 2007).

After we left Mr. Poku’s house, we went to Toronto Mall. We all didn’t really have money for shopping, so we just got some pizza in the cafeteria, then headed back to our condo.

Sunday we got up super early and made our 3.5 hour trip back to Buffalo airport, where we said our goodbyes.

It was a short trip home, thankfully. I was so happy to be home! It was a decent trip, but like they say….there’s no place like home….

🙂
