Great News!

March 24, 2011 By Serena Leave a Comment

I know each time I post I am always talking about how regrettful I am not to have posted as much lately. But I can’t help but start off this way, because it’s a shame I haven’t made more of an effort to keep my blog going. This is the way that I document the beautiful things of my life, particulary my children’s lives, and if I don’t write it down, I’m afraid the beautiful moments will just drift away. I’ve got a terrible memory.

So here we go again…..with more of an update, several times a week, and as needed, so I don’t forget things.

Things in our household are pretty good. The big news……I’m PREGNANT!!! Yes, again!!! We haven’t officially made the announcement to everyone, but I have been telling people here and there, and really don’t feel the need to keep it too quiet. We soooo weren’t trying. However, we weren’t preventing, either. I wasn’t expecting (or hoping!) to get pregnant this time of year, right as Spring was approaching, followed by the all-you-can-drink summer season, either. In fact, we have our Jamaica trip (with Dameon and Avion and a group of people) this coming June, so you know I wasn’t trying to get pregnant at this time!

But things happen when they are supposed to, and this is what we’ve got! And I do have to say, I was happy about it when I found out. Financially it’s a little of a blow, considering that Kwabena will be starting school in August and we were hoping to pocket those daycare expenses now. And I was afraid we would have to upgrade our cars (we don’t want car payments right now, though), but I think we’ll be okay with just getting upgraded, slim carseats. So on that front, we’ll be fine.

I found out on Thursday, March 10th. I had taken the day off from work to get some sanding and staining done to this dresser and desk that I had been working on. That was my goal. To spend the day being productive! But first….I needed to stop off and pick up a pregnancy test after I dropped the kids off at Miss Marilyn’s. I had my suspicions because of the timeframe that we had sex. And because the week before, on a Saturday night, I felt about a minute of nausea and was a little suspect. Anyhow, so I went to get the test….tested when I got home, unbeknownst to Kwasi, and wouldn’t you know it….FAINT POSITIVE!!

So I walked over to the office room, with the test behind my back, and said, “I have a new poem for you:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Things aren’t always what they seem,
I guess we’re not stopping at two!!”

LOL….Yes, he was shocked, but positive about it, and happy about it. Sooo….Here we go again!!

Yesterday I had an appointment at my OBs office, to get the order for the ultrasound in about a week and a half, and to get a prescription for prenatals, and to get my blood drawn. I haven’t talked to them yet today to find out what my levels are, but we’ll see. I don’t even FEEL pregnant, but I’m not surprised because I didn’t feel that way with Kwabena or Ohene, either. For some reason, my body handles pregnancy very well. 🙂

We haven’t told Kwabena yet. We just can’t, because otherwise, he would go and tell Miss Marilyn, and it’s just too early to let her know. She’s got the biggest mouth of anyone I know, and just loves to share news with anybody and everybody.

I did tell Ohene, though 😉 He’s not telling anyone, LOL.

So…..let’s see….I have a lot of update:

Things are going really well with us. I’m on this new initiative, called “3 Weeks to the Perfectly Organized Life.” I have made it a point to do all the things that I don’t want to do, or that I procrastinate on, like getting lunch packed the night before, getting clothes picked out the night before, folding clothes right out of the dryer instead of packing them away in the basket to sit for 2 weeks in a big heap, etc. I started it over the weekend, and it’s going pretty well. My mornings are so much less stressed. I’m even getting the kitchen cleaned up each night after dinner, instead of piling in the dishes, leaving food out, etc. I just can’t live messy and lazy like that anymore!!!

So this is Week 1, and I’m enjoying the new-found organization and motivation to get things done!! Let’s keep up the momentum!

Kwasi is doing well. His latest thing is that he wants to get an elliptical trainer so that he can work out at home. That would be a great investment into our health! Work is going okay for him. Thank God he works from home. Should make the school transition easy, especially since he’ll be able to do drop-offs and pick-ups.

Kwabena is doing wonderful! He’s had some moments here and there where he was acting up at daycare, not doing his school work, etc., etc., but he’s been doing really great! Our latest thing is reading chapter books. I dind’t even think to go this route, because I thought he may not like that they aren’t the colorful pictures like the Berenstein Bears or something, but this book we’re reading right now, “Super Chicken Nugget Boy,” has some pictures and is a nice-sized chapter book. And he loves listening to me read it to him at night. Kwabena is reading on his own, like Stage 1 -3 books. He’s doing pretty good!! I’m so proud of him.

He’s got neighbor friends, Hasain and Naziat, that come over nearly daily to play with him. This past weekend he looked for them all day, until they finally got home from Sunday school. The other day, though, the 10-year old girl, Naziat, got mad at Kwabena because he made a comment when they were looking at this Halloween costume book; he said, “Sexy belly!” or something like that, and from what Kwasi and Kwabena report, the girl got really upset and offended and threatened to not come over anymore if Kwabena says that. Apparently they are very conservative or something. After that, Kwabena corrects anyone that uses the word “sexy” since she reacted that way. I had tried to tell him that he just can’t say those kinds of things, especially for his age, and because people may be sensitive to those kinds of words, etc. I think it was a learning lesson for him.

He’s doing great with his school work! I’ve been trying to have him sit down for 15-30 minutes each day (only started this consecutively in the past week) after he comes home from Miss Marilyn’s so that he can get into that routine of doing homework when he comes home. I don’t wnat him to be shocked when he starts school and he starts having to do something that he’s not used to. We’d never placed a big importance or emphasis on doing school work at home. But now that he starts school this mid-August, better prepare him now!

Oh, yeah– he and Kwasi are going to Ghana this summer!!!! Whoa….I sooo wish I could go as a family 🙁 But the cost of it will be too much, and honestly, I don’t have the vacation time to pull of a 2.5 week trip. I will need that time for maternity leave. I wish I could be there to experience how Kwabena reacts to being in a whole other country, but I guess I’ll just have to get the reports, and to catch the video when he gets back. Boo hoo…..But I guess it will be time for me and Ohene to bond together with just us, and to enjoy a quiet house for a little. It will be super sad without them there, though!!!

Ohene is doing wonderful! He’s now 15 months old. He’s still not saying “Mommy” or “Daddy,” although he will occasionally say “Da.” However, the little stinker will say “Sponge Bob”! Can you believe that?! LOL I don’t know if Kwabena was really saying much at 15 months. I did see in previous blog posts that he was saying 3-word sentences at 21 months. I don’t think Ohene will be at that stage then, but we’ll see. I have heard him say “Bye bye” which he won’t say now, he just waves. He will try to say dog, cheese, and more. And he talks up a storm; I just don’t know what he’s saying 🙂

He’s become quite the little bad-ass lately! LOL It’s really sort of cute, though, for 15 months. For example, a couple weekeneds ago, I heard Kwabena call for me, “Moooooommmmyyyyy….Ohene’s hitting meeeeee.” I go into the living room to find Kwabena cowered in the corner, with Ohene standing over him with a sword, hitting Kwabena over the head, with a big smile on his face. LOL. And one day, Kwabena didn’t want Ohene to play with the Play-Doh Burger Builder that he was playing with, and after telling Ohene “no!” Ohene picked up the container and started, meanly, hitting Kwabena over the head with it!

A couple weekends ago, too, I was on the phone with Morning a lot that morning, and Ohene, with a big smile on his face, must have been trying to get my attention or something, because he came over to me (as I was sitting on the kitchen floor), and started throwing things at my head! And when I would grab his hand and try to squeeze a bit to make my point of not throwing things, he would just smile and then start jockeying for position again to throw MORE things at me! Funny kid…….

But he’s sooo lovable, too! I love the way he hugs Kwabena as soon as Kwabena comes into our room in the morning after waking up (Ohene is still sleeping with us). It’s amazing the love they have for each other, and that they actually get along. It’s so sweet! And just to think there is going to be 3 of them now! Well, 3 kids….not sure if it will be a girl or a boy. A girl would be nice, but that would always pit them again her. A boy would be more ideal, so they can all play together.

Anyhow, here are a few cute things:

  • SCENE: Kwabena and me were looking at a map of the world, and I was naming off important places, one of which was Afghanistan, and how there are a lot of people getting hurt over there. KWABENA’S RESPONSE: “Well, maybe I can save them.” So cute!
  • Last weekend we spent a beautiful, rainy Sunday in the house, making pancakes and sausage for breakfast, while listening to my favorite thing I discovered recently: acoustic Sunday’s, on the radio! Recently, while it was raining, we even went outside to the stoop of the doorway and ate breakfast there together, watching the rain come down. Too bad Kwasi had to go to work and couldn’t join us 🙁
  • Kwabena recently said to me: KWABENA: “when I grow up, I’m going to eat meat. ME: “what kind?” KWABENA: Maybe snake….” LOL….I keep telling him if he wants to eat meat, he can try it; I just am not going to cook it or give it to him, but he can have it on his own. And he keeps insisiting it’s something he will eat when he grows up. HAHA
  • This happened on February 5th, last month: Ohene pointed to our Target cashier, who was sporting a woolly beard and a Muslim-like kufi……..just like Daddy wears a lot……and said, “Da!”…. Hilarious!! See how he noticed a man that looks like Kwasi!
  • Here’s a quote that I had come across some time ago that I love: ‎”The quality of your life is in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty you can comfortably live with….If you have to be certain all the time, you are in a prison……It’s in the realm of uncertainty that your passion is found….That’s when you’re alive.” ~Anthony Robbins
  • I’ve been writing some poetry lately, and interested in looking up some poets and what-not. And here are a couple poems by Langston Huges that I really liked:

ACCEPTANCE

God in His infinite wisdom
Did not make me very wise-
So when my actions are stupid…
They hardly take God by surprise”

~Langston Hughes

April Rain Song

Let the rain kiss you
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops
Let the rain sing you a lullaby…
The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk
The rain makes running pools in the gutter
The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night
And I love the rain.

Langston Hughes

Helen Keller

She,
In the dark,
Found light…
Brighter than many ever see.
She,
Within herself,
Found loveliness,
Through the soul’s own mastery.
And now the world receives
From her dower:
The message of the strength
Of inner power.

~Langston Hughes

Anyhow, just a few poems I had come across that I really loved and spoke to me. I haven’t been writing as much poetry lately, but I want to continue. It’s something I really enjoy and am good at. And I love presenting it in front of a live audience at Bus Boys & Poets in D.C.

Well, there is much more I could write….I just don’t have the time. I try to do it at night, to write, but I just haven’t had the drive to do it, so I’m doing it here, utilizing company’s time 😉 Better get back to work!
