Spring Cleaning

April 26, 2010 By Serena Leave a Comment

Our house looks like a tornado hit it. I’m not lying. Shit lying everywhere. Well, at least, that’s what it DID look like, until this weekend (our bedroom still looks pretty hopeless, however). Kwasi’s brother, Osei, came home from Atlanta this weekend and helped rent a truck to haul our old super-large dinosaur-of-a-TV to Kwasi’s mom’s house, along with the ginormous TV stand. WHEW! I had thought I would make the corner into a new reading corner, but after seeing how much more clean and tidy and spacious the living room looks without that bulky TV set, I’m realizing that a clean corner doesn’t necessarily have to be filled with junk.

Today Kwabena told me that he was sad. “You know why, Mommy? Because you didn’t play with me at all this weekend.” 🙁 Poor thing. Ohene was pretty neglected, too. Kwasi was working, so it was just me here trying to tidy up this house while caring for two small kids. I was happy, however, to see that when I turned the TV off Kwabena actually was having imaginative play on his own, carrying on conversations between his cars and what-not. Sort of refreshing to see versus letting him just sit and watch SpongeBob all morning!

He also said to me this weekend that he told Miss Marilyn, his daycare, that I don’t help him at home with his writing. Shame on me. I know this is something that I should be doing. But it’s just something that gets pushed to the wayside for all the other things I have to do–clean up, laundry, caring for Ohene, etc. This evening, however, I did make time for his writing. Had him write his name. He was complaining of being tired, like he usually does when he doesn’t want to do something. I also had him work on holding his pencil. He still has an awkward grip, using 4 fingers and thumb versus 2 fingers and thumb. So, every night, I’ll have him work on writing his name at least once, and maybe some other words that he knows how to read. We’ll see how that goes.

What else is new…..?

Ohene is doing great! At his 4 month check-up was last week or so. He is now 16 lbs, 7 oz…..25.5″ long (I think), and his head was about 16″ or so. He’s doing well at Miss Marilyn’s. She has him on a schedule, where he takes a morning and afternoon nap, at which I was surprised to see that he falls asleep on his own! I have started doing that at home with him, trying to get him to fall asleep on his own. It works sometimes, other times not. It’s funny to see him lying there in the bassinet, cuddling his little lovey that I bought him last weekend, and kicking his right leg. HA!

Kwabena is doing well, too. I feel bad that he doesn’t get the same amount and quality of attention as before. Seems like he acts out a lot, just doing things that are so annoying (like coming up and jumping on your back or something), and all we do some days are bitch at him. I feel bad for him sometimes.

There’s more I want to write, but physically cannot right now. I am exhausted! I went out last night to a club called Zanzibar, with my friend, Lamarr. It was a lot of fun! And with only 3 hours of sleep, I can barely keep my eyes open right now. ‘Night!
