Nothing Sweeter

July 25, 2008 By Serena Leave a Comment

There is nothing sweeter than your child telling you they love you. Melts my heart.

So last night as Kwabi and I cuddled in his bed while he went to sleep. He took my arm and wrapped it around himself, then wrapped his arm around my neck, with his beautiful little face and clammy forehead pressed up against mine. Next thing I know, he pulls my face in and presses his lips to mine several times, giving me lots of kisses, and said, “I love you, Mommy.”

It doesn’t get much better than that 🙂

At some point, Kwabena will transition to being able to fall asleep on his own………….I will take him to his room, read him stories, and then leave him to peacefully fall asleep on his own.

But I haven’t tried yet.

I thought about this last night and realized that each day, my baby boy is turning into a big boy……….becoming more independent at his own time. Each night, he and I get to cuddle with each other as he drifts off to sleep, which is such a great bonding time for us at the end of a long day of being separated due to work and daycare……..that I realized WHY should I rush his growing up??

Years from now, when he prefers to be with his friends instead of Mom and Dad……….when he prefers to shut his bedroom door and go to sleep on his own, dreaming of girls and friends instead of choo-choo trains and toy cars………….when he doesn’t “need” us as much as before, I will look back on these early years and our time spent cuddling before bed, and be thankful that I savored each night instead of pushing for him to become independent too soon.
