Kwabena and I had a great time this weekend at Ocean City! We were actually supposed to go down for the day with Mom, Trey (my nephew), and Camryn (my niece). Since Bee (my sister) works at a nearby hospital, it made sense for them to take the 1.5 hour drive with her….then drive to Ocean City with Kwabena and me…..drive back to my house on Saturday night….spend the day together on Sunday, and then have Bee pick them up on Sunday evening.
I was really looking forward to us having a nice family day together, because it’s been stressful for my family since everyone moved out of the townhouse and went their own separate ways (long story). But I was disappointed to hear that Bee ran a red flashing light that morning at 5 a.m. and crashed into another car, going 50 mph. I’m relieved that no one was seriously injured!!!
I was going to drive to Hagerstown to pick them up myself, but (1) the drive to-and-from Hagerstown then 3 hours to Ocean City just wasn’t feasible, and (2) they really just needed a day to relax and recover from their mental and physical trauma.
So Kwabena and I drove down ourselves!
The drive there took a bit over 3 hours. It honestly wasn’t that bad. But reminder to pregnant self–do not attempt to drive and drink water! I had to stop every 30 minutes for the first leg of the trip! Not good….. LOL. Coming home only took 2 and 1/2 hours, and Kwabena was knocked out the whole time! He ended up sleeping for 13 hours that night! He’s NEVER done that before! He must have been exhausted!
And he had to have been!! He had soooo much fun! The way he squealed with joy when the wakes crashed over his feet, I remember thinking, “This drive was well worth it!” Sheer pleasure 🙂 And the way he ran his cars through the sand, making roads, and becoming mesmorized at how the water instantly washed the sand off of his cars, was so cute.
We held hands and ventured into the icy cold water, which soon warmed up nicely on our legs. We turned our backs and let the waves crash into us, while Kwabena held on fiecely to my hand (otherwise the water, which knocked him off of his feet, would have drawn him in!). He played a game of cat-and-mouse with the waves, and then took to lying in the sand, where it coated his body and hair (ugh, the mess of cleaning him up!!). But my baby had the best time! And when asked what his favorite part of the day was, he said, “Playing in the water.” 🙂
After a few hours, we walked back to the car (no way I was paying $30 to park that day!! I was lucky enough to find somewhat of a spot for free) and then we changed in the car. But cleaning sand from your asshole is NOT the prettiest site on a public street! LOL
Afterwards we went for ice cream, and to the kite store. Kwabena loved his DQ softserve with sprinkles, but later insisted that we “switch ice creams; you take mine and I’ll take yours.” For some reason, I didn’t think he cared for mint…?
The minute we got in the car, he took a few bites of my switched ice cream (I couldn’t say no), and then handed it off to me, and then crashed into a deep sleep. When we got home, he briefly woke up when I laid him in his bed, and he whispered out excitedly, “Daddy, we went to the beach!!” There was no way I was going to let him tell Kwasi about our day–otherwise he would wake up completely after that 2.5 hour nap and be until until 1 a.m.! So, we crept out of his room, and miraculously, he slept 13 hours!
I was disappointed that Kwasi didn’t come with us 🙁 He didn’t want to take off work from the shop. In fact, weeks ago when I bought up the idea to spend the day at the beach, he shot it down so quickly, “Why do you want to go to the beach??” as if suggesting a day at the beach was a crazy idea. Hmph. Anyhow, he has plans to take off from work next Saturday to attend an event his friend is having, so taking off two Saturdays in the row wasn’t favorable. So I guess Kwabena and I got the short end of the stick.
But anyhow, Kwabena and I had fun by ourselves, and I love that we take weekend daytrips to fun places, like Ocean City, Brookside Gardens, National Zoo, etc. I only hope that as Kwabena gets older, he remembers the fabulous, fun weekends that he and I spend together, and is thankful that he’s got a mom who has the opportunity to let him experience all of these cool things! 🙂
