So I was showing Kwabena my scrapbook Mom had made for me several years ago, and there was a pic of me at age 3 with Santa. Kwabena pointed it out and asked, “Is Santa Clause real?” I said to him, “No, Santa’s not real. It’s just something that parents think is fun that parents tell their kids. Really, we’re all Santa, and it’s about the spirit of giving to others” blah blah blah. He asked, “But how do you know there is no Santa?” I said, “Because I just know there isn’t. It’s really the parents that are buying the presents for kids.” And I reminded him that he can’t tell other kids this, because their parents will have to tell them themselves. He said to me, “But if parents tell their kids that there is a Santa, and then they tell the kids there IS no Santa, the kids are going to get mad at their parents.” I said to him, “Well, yes, the kids might be upset.” I told him that I will always tell him the truth about EVERYTHING, and if he ever wants to know anything, he can always come to Mommy and Daddy to find out the answers; we’d never lie to him. So he said, “Mommy, if Daddy doesn’t want me to know something, but you know it, and I don’t, will you tell me??” OMG, the way he asked me that took me aback, because he asked me in a way as if he was begging me to please make sure I tell him the truth. I assured him that I will ALWAYS tell him the truth, and that he doesn’t have to worry, because Daddy will, too. 🙂
