Sell This House!

May 31, 2010 By Serena Leave a Comment

Let the home selling and buying begin!

So this is Memorial Day weekend, and because of the extended holiday weekend, I had hoped to get a lot done around the house as we prep it to sell. However, it seems like I am wasting a lot of time. Last night I was supposed to go out and party, but my plans fell through, and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because I ended up getting a second coat of paint in the master bathroom. So….progress, right?

Today I met up with Vanda, our agent, to look at homes. I know the rule is that you don’t go looking at home until you’ve at least gotten a contract on the home you’re selling. But I really just wanted to get out there and see some homes in order to help keep the momentum going. I know what we can afford, too, so it’s good to actually see what we’re working with in that ball park.

It’s a little daunting, however. In this area of Silver Spring, you won’t get anything decent until you start hitting $380K and above. The home in Burtonsville that we looked at today was $400K, which probably could be bought for less, according to Vanda. But still, it was at the top of our range. But it was very nice. The back yard was amazingly big….the deck was huge….the master bedroom was huge, with its own private deck….. I liked that it had 4 levels (it was a split-level home), but with some of those split level homes the rooms are pretty tiny. And that was the case with the formal living room and family room area. Plus, the family room area seemed sort of dark, which was a turn off. And I didn’t like that it didn’t have some separate rooms for a sewing room and an office room. Those are two rooms I am really looking for!

So as me and Kwabena (Ohene stayed home with Kwasi) went looking it was nice to see homes. But no, we really can’t do anything until we get our condo on the market. I’m very excited about this process! It’s daunting to sell, though, because I have no idea how long it will take to get a buyer. And what if the offer isn’t what we’re looking for?

All we can do is try to clear out as much clutter as possible and then stage it to look nice. And then we should be able to move on to the next step: buying a single family home with the back yard, school district, room sizes and lay-out, and every other feature we’re looking for!

Oh, by the way, this is what we’re looking for:

  • Good school district (priority!!)
  • Spacious, with room to grow
  • Big back yard with room for boys to run, as well as a garden.
  • Private
  • Has character (would prefer an older home).
  • 3 BR
  • 2.5+ bath
  • Office space
  • Sewing/craft room for me!!! Necessity!!!!!!

Well, that’s about it. I know it’s a lot to ask for, especially in our price range, which is hardly anything in this area……But we’ll see what shall come up!! 🙂
