An End to Procrastination

August 12, 2008 By Serena 2 Comments

I am the worst procrastinator. Even if I have a list of Things to Do, I often “forget” to look at it, or even if I look at it, I discard the items for later when I feel more motivated to do them. Maybe we all procrastinate at one time or another, but for me, it just feels like I do it more than others. And it’s not a good feeling.

I think procrastination is partly due to fear, depending on the task; the fear of facing something and failing, or facing it and not doing a particularly good job, or fearing the truth. Or sometimes when you face what you’ve been putting off, it’s going to require you to make a decision that you don’t want to make, for a number of reasons.

I’ve been procrasting with:

1. Decisions concerning homebuying.

2. Evaluating elementary schools so we could make a more informed decision about where to even look for homes.

3. Getting Kwabena’s room set up. His crib, which he hasn’t used in 8 months, is still standing in his room, empty. Not sure where the procrastination is coming from on that. Maybe uncertainty of how to take it apart? Where and how to even store it post-deconstruction??

4. Sewing. I use lack of time as an excuse, but somehow I find hours and hours to play on my new Mac. Maybe I don’t think I can succeed with my sewing, so I am avoiding even doing it.

And I’m sure there are countless other examples of ways in which I am procrastinating.

So I’ve decided that I am going to dedicate part of this blog to tackling my procrastination. Or maybe even set up a whole new blog to track my progress.

Maybe I can work on them all at the same time?

The first step will be to meet with the financial guy tomorrow, and actually run some numbers based on hypothetical buying scenarios, to see how much home we could really afford. That will be a starting point.

I’ll keep you updated on the rest of the progress!

Edited to add: I decided to create a link to my new blog, Decimation of Procrastination, which will document my daily attempts at banishing procrastination and reaching my goals! Check it out at: http://decimationofprocrastination.blogspot.com/
