Feelin’ Better!

January 9, 2010 By Serena Leave a Comment

Thank God Ohene is feeling better!

I had taken him to the dr. yesterday to make sure. They didn’t retest him for RSV; I assume it’s because he didn’t have a fever or any other symptoms other than head congestion. But I would rather pay the $25 to be sure than to risk his health. He’s much too young to be sick!

So while at the Dr. office yesterday, while getting Ohene dressed, I realized that the poor thing was filthy! LOL! We have been wiping his butt down, but had not given him a real bath yet. So imagine my surprise when I lifted the baby fat folds of his underarms and saw CHEESE! EEWW!!! It smelled sour, too! BAD Mommy!!

I made it my mission to bathe him last night. I guess we had procrastinated on it because it’s been sooo cold, and then with the sickness, I didn’t think it would be a good idea. But the Dr. said the only thing to be careful about is to make sure he doesn’t get chilled.

I steamed up the bathroom, brought all his clothes into the bathroom, and submerged Ohene in a bath full of water. At first, he couldn’t decide if he liked it or not! LOL! But I guess after a moment, he decided, indeed, it was enjoyable! He didn’t stay in there long because he pooped in the tub! LOL

Kwabena was so cute; he wanted to play photographer, just like always! I swear this kid needs his own camera, because he loves taking pics and video. Kwasi usually complains about Kwabena using the camera, for fear he’s going to break it. It’s definitely time to get his own camera!

Anyhow, here are the pics of Ohene’s first bath! 🙂

The hardest thing, lately, is dealing with Kwabena’s lack of following directions. He had the nerve to tell Mom on the phone tonight (talking to her on the phone on the way to the grocery store tonight), “I can’t follow directions because of my brain.” HA! LOL… I’ve started trying to reward his behavior when he follows directions (versus penalizing him when he doesn’t follow directions). I started a “Star” chart. Whenever he follows directions (i.e. when I only have to ask him to do something once or twice) then he gets a star sticker. If he gets enough stickers (i.e. five), then he gets rewards.

I bought him this dinosaur Hot Wheels track (two of them, actually), and he’s earned it. But it was hard getting to that point! Mom pointed out that the problem with delaying the gratification of earning the reward is not going to change his behavior; I think she’s right. It’s still been hard getting him to get dressed in the morning without 10,000 reminders/directives. It’s just as hard getting him to put on his pajamas. **SIGH**….. Mom suggested using more immediate rewards, like the Grab Bag of goodies and fun things. And whenever he follows directions, he gets to reach in the Grab Bag. I think I am going to try that, as well. We need to do something. Because it’s a hassle trying to get him to get dressed.

The reason for the challenge in the morning is because I think he really doesn’t want to go to Miss Marilyn’s. This morning, in fact, he whined about not wanting to go. There was a 2-hr delay for county schools, so we were delayed, as well. That wasn’t enough for him, though. He wanted to stay home. No way. We have to pay for the full week, so you’re going, buddy! If I only had to pay for the days that he went, I would keep him home more often.

Anyhow, I’m sitting here yawning….so tired! Ohene’s getting over his congestion, but I think it’s still affecting his sleep. The other night he was so irritable, crying and waking more often than usual, during the night. Last night it seemed like he woke every hour or so. UGH…..Thank God I am one that is able to survive on little sleep. I am able to still function during the day on that kind of sleep. It’s definitely not the desirable situation, though. I miss cuddling up in my bed and just zonking out for 5-6 hours. Ahhhhh…….. Now, I cuddle up with Ohene, keeping one eye open, it feels like. And whenever I try to lay him down in his bassinet, he’s soon grunting and about to belt out a “Hold me, Mommy!” cry. He just loves to be cuddled and held. Even during the day, the only way to get him to nap for long periods of time is to lie him face down on the Boppy pillow, like this:

Off to bed….’Night!
