Ghana Independence Day (Embassy Party)

March 11, 2009 By Serena Leave a Comment

Last Friday was Ghana’s 52nd Independence Day.

Kwasi, me, and Kwabena were invited to the Ghana Embassy in D.C. to attend the Independence Day celebration. This uncle’s wife works there. I was a little skeptical about how much fun we would have; some Ghanaian events seemed a bit too uptight, and I always stand out like a sore thumb.

So we put on our African gear…me in my traditional African outfit….Kwasi in his Ghanaian shirt…and Kwabena in his Ghanaian flag shirt that Grandpa (RIP) bought for him a couple years ago (but never wore until now).

Here’s a pic of Kwabena strikin’ a gangsta lean before we left the house. Very “Snoop Dog” -ish with his ponytail. LOL

On the way in to the party, Kwabena had a long conversation with his Aunt Bee, telling her about his “super fast Lamborghini Murcialago” remote control car that he has in his home. He cracked me up with the way he was chatting! When did my toddler become such a big boy??? (Oh, and I also know that kids shouldn’t use cell phones, so please, save those comments. What can you do, you know??)

Chatting with Aunt Bee:

But that night, the place was hoppin’! The music was good…people were dancing…and I was wearing my traditional African wear (for the first time ever!). I felt quite sexy, I have to admit (and sorry, I have to say that many a men in there thought so, too ;-P). There’s something about the way those Ghanaian outfits hug your curves in all the right places. Very feminine, indeed.

Here’s a pic of my outfit, sans my head. Kwabena was the lovely photographer. 🙂

Another shot by Kwabena, the photographer:

When we arrived, the first thing Kwabena wanted to do, of course, was to run to the table of snacks, grabbing cookies and snacks. And before you know it, he was allll over the place: darting in and out of the crowd, without so much as a glance behind him to see where we were. It was like he thought he owned the place. I felt bad pushing through the crowd to find him, interrupting people’s conversations. We tried to discipline him, but nothing was working. We realized 1) we’re just going to have to chase him and keep and eye on him, and 2) we can never take this child with us to an event in which WE are expecting to do grown-up activities!

He was the life of the party, though! I can’t tell you the number of people that complimented me on his cuteness…..his cute outfit….took a picture and/or video…..or just plan looked at me like, “Ugh, those poor, tired parents!” LOL

Kwasi and I wanted to dance, and mingle, and sip alcohol from the FREE open bar. But our hands were tied in playing “chase” with Kwabena. Well, we had fun, but seriously: unless an event is specifically for kids, I think we’re leaving Kwabena home next time! LOL

Take a break outside the party:

Kwasi getting HIS “dance” on.

Getting my “dance” on. (Why do I always raise my arms and turn to the side?!)

Love the flag in the background…

I love these two pics of Kwasi. He looks very cute and happy 🙂

Some guy at the party like Kwabena so much that he was going to let him pose for a pic in his super fast yellow Corvette, but for some reason, Kwabena didn’t want to! Funny, though, because he mentioned the car the following day! LOL

The party didn’t last too long. We left about 10 p.m. or so. In the car, Kwabena wanted to take some pics. We decided to make faces!

Here’s me telling Kwabena to make a face.

Kwabena taking a funny picture of me:

Anyhow, the night was fun! I am sorry we didn’t get a group picture, but Kwabena just wouldn’t sit still long enough for that. So…… we’ll make do with the pics we got. 🙂
